Arts Every Day’s Youth Curatorial Program

The 10X10 Exhibit Youth Curatorial Program provides a one-of-a-kind experience in a GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) field to high school students by breaking down boundaries that have traditionally excluded historically underrepresented communities. The program is a two month long series of workshops and conversations that uses Arts Every Day’s 10X10 Exhibit, an annual student art exhibit for Baltimore City Public School students, to learn about and apply their knowledge in a practicum style setting. The team learns about contemporary practices from a professional curator and 10X10 Exhibit organizer who:

        • helps students pull from personal experiences to identify and discuss themes in the artwork;
        • facilitates discourse resulting in an official curatorial statement;
        • guides each student in drafting individual artist statements as well as reflections on the process of curating through their own interpretation of the work that is shared at the opening reception;
        • assists students in developing valuable networking, communications and critical thinking skills that translate into valuable workforce qualities while strengthening our youth’s connection to Baltimore City’s arts community.

Students are provided a stipend to compensate the individual for their time. The process involves learning about curating, examining historical barriers of the creative industry, discourse surrounding issues involving the arts and Baltimore City Schools, looking over artwork submissions, planning out the exhibition layout, installing the show, and participating in the opening reception. Students learn the logistics behind exhibitions and get the opportunity to meet art teachers, student artists, and community partners.
